The Quest of Raul the Foole

Mini-Adventure: The Art of Courtly Life
Everyone present in the above Roll Call was likewise present to participate in the mini-adventure. The Lady Claressant was concerned that the knights and Celsus were too ignorant in terms of courtly manners. Therefore, she invited them to a special luncheon and gave them some tips and training on how to behave in formal settings. The feast allowed them to put various “genteel” skills to practice, including a poetry contest.

Rumors
The brigands belonging to Regmar’s band who were captured last year are currently in prison in Beale Valet. The Black Shields refused to talk, but the lesser brigands did. They claim that Regmar has been learning magic from a mysterious spell book, and uses enchantments to keep his outpost hidden. Even his followers cannot locate it without his direct intervention.

It should be pointed out that over the past few years, Earl Dafydd has repeatedly sent troops into the local forests trying to find the lair of Regmar and his men. Such missions were always fruitless.

The brigands also claim that Regmar has been teaching magic to his three sons. They are destined to be even more powerful, and possibly even more ruthless, than Regmar himself.

Knighting Ceremony
Earl Dafydd knights Jaufre. He is now a bachelor knight of the realm.

The Quest of Raul the Foole
Raul, the court jester of Beale Valet, send the knights, plus Celsus, on a kind of scavenger hunt. The Countess Lanna lent him her bracelet to hide somewhere in town. The characters were to undergo a series of challenges in order to win wooden coins. Each coin was to then be taken to the Castle of Beale Valet and given to Sir Gorn sans Humour. He would then exchange the coin for an item from the kitchen which would serve as a clue to where the bracelet was hidden. Such clues were officially called, “Magnificent Awe-Inspiring Quest Items.” Theronde the Sage was designated as the “Clue Master”, meaning that he would give out clues to help the characters, if needed. The fewer the amount of clues requested by the players, the greater the rewards that could be won.

On the other hand, failure to find the bracelet would result in Raul the Foole lampooning the characters. This would cause each character to lose 100 points of Glory.

Challenge #1: Horse Race
The characters competed against hunters in a typical horse race. Damahaut came in 1st Place. The Magnificent Awe-Inspiring Quest Item was a jar of icing.

Challenge #2: Rescue Sweetums
The characters visited an old widow named Lady Dillia, whose cat, Sweetums, was stuck in a tree. Despite the daunting task of conducting an opposed DEX roll against an untrusting cat, Galien successfully pulled off the rescue mission. The resulting Magnificent Awe-Inspiring Quest Item was some tea.

*Challenge #3: Joanette’s Riddle"
Next the characters met with Joanette in the Great Hall of the Castle of Beale Valet. She presented the following riddle: “A hundred feet up in the air, but its back is on the ground. What is it?” Damahaut won the right to guess first, and he correctly discerned the answer to be a flipped over centipede. The allowed the party to attain a Magnificent Awe-Inspiring Quest Item in the form of mustard.

Challenge #4: Searching the Wine Cellar
Sir Gorn sans Humour instructed the characters about the nature of the next quest. They were to take turns searching through the dark wine cellar by the light of a single, small candle. They were to find a particular bottle of wine, the label depicting it to be from the Vineyards of the Bellicose Bluffton Bastard and his Beastly Belligerent Beholder. Romulus was the first one to try, and he succeeded, gaining the next Magnificent Awe-Inspiring Quest Item, which was a spoon.

Challenge #5: The Duel
For the final part of the quest, the characters squared off with one another in non-lethal duels. Sir Edam was there with his trusty mace to compete against the them. In the first round, Damahaut defeated Edam, Galien defeated Turpin, Riorden defeated Jaufre, and Romulus defeated Celsus.

In the second round, Galien defeated Riorden, and Damahaut defeated Romulus. In the third, and final round, Damahaut defeated Galien. Of course, all that was needed to win the last Magnificent Awe-Inspiring Quest Item was to defeat Sir Edam. This last quest item was some honey.

The party then attempted to figure out how the five Magnificent Awe-Inspiring Quest Items unlocked the secret of the location of the countess’ bracelet. After everyone tested a couple of erroneous theories, it suddenly dawned upon Josh K. that the first letters from each of the quest items could be assembled to form the word “smith.” They then visited the somewhat unstable blacksmiths, Valter, Hamon and Hablet, and retrieved the bracelet. Therefore the characters successfully completed the Quest of Raul the Fool, and did not need to get a single clue from Therondre the Sage in order to do so.

The Creepy Raven
While taking the bracelet back to the castle, the party noticed that a large ominous looking raven was greedily eyeing it. Unlike normal ravens, this one had a blood red beak, and blood red feet & claws.

The Chromatic Dragon was finally open so we gathered there for a pre-game dinner. Dinner went a bit long though, causing the game to start at 7:30. In light of this, Eric the Cleric skipped the Mini-Adventure.

Rumors
1) As you know, at Christmastime each year, the Cathedral of St. Paul in London hosts a gathering to see if anyone can pull Excalibur from the anvil and stone, and therefore be revealed as the rightful High King of Britain. As unbelievable as it sounds, no one has been able to do this yet!

2) Stolen Items: As a brief recap, the following items were mysteriously stolen in recent years: A.D. 495: Gold & silver items from the Church of the Sac red Heart in Beale Valet (i.e., candlesticks, chalices, patens, etc.).
A.D. 496: The jewel encrusted dagger belonging to Sir Gorn sans Humour, the earl’s butler. Whoever took this managed to pick the lock of the chest it was kept in.
A.D. 499: A golden chalice inlaid with emeralds was stolen from Ramsey Abbey. It is not only a precious treasure but also a historical artifact, being the first chalice used at Mass when Ramsey Abbey was founded. The thief either picked the lock of the sacristy or had a key.
A.D. 500: 240 shillings intended to be used as a ransom for Sir Emeric were stolen from a chest that was both locked and secured with a chain.
Update: So far none of the items have been recovered, and the thief (or thieves) is still at large. No other theft of this caliber has been reported in the past couple of years.

3) According to various reports throughout the local realm, Regmar the Brigand King has grown more powerful and cruel as the years go by. It should be pointed out that the robberies committed by him and his men involve brute force and often murder, and lack the sublety associated with the thefts that were just mentioned in this set of rumors. Nevertheless, Regmar’s campaign of crime has successfully netted him quite a fortune, so much so that he is able to provide exemplary equipment and training to many of his men. He even has an elite squad of warriors known as the Black Shields, because they paint their shields jet black. These are no common brigands, because they fight with the skill of battle-hardened knights. It is also said that the forces of Regmar include even more deadlier fiends…

Regmar & the Black Shields
A hunter on horseback came across a frantic peasant in the woods who said he was running for his life. He claimed to be from the hamlet of Split Leaf Court which had just been seized by Regmar the Brigand King and his forces. The hunter brought the peasant to Beale Valet, and the earl quickly dispatched the knights, some squires, and a team of hobilars to deal with the situation.

Present at the hamlet was Regmar mounted upon a demonic horse called a hell steed. Also there were his three sons (triplets appearing to be about nine years of age; mounted on coursers), eight of the elite brigand horsemen known as the Black Shields, Erzog the Ogre, and a few normal brigands on foot. Most of the peasants were locked in a barn.

Combat started with Regmar challenging whoever felt worthy enough to confront him in single combat. Athras accepted the challenge, and he and his mount were magically transported to the Realm of Mists. Beside them were a peasant couple, bound and blindfolded. Regmar told Athras that even though he would certainly lose the duel, his survival was guaranteed so that he could spread the word about the invincible nature of the Brigand King. But the price of his failure would be the death of the two peasants.

In the joust that ensued, Athras was able to successfully strike and wound Regmar in a lance charge. But then the hell steed breathed a ball of green fire upon Athras’ charger, incinerating it. Without the benefit of a mount, Athras was injured by Regmar to the point of unconsciousness. A few rounds later, he regained his senses, discovering that he was not actually wounded, but the two peasants were decapitated. Athras then found himself back in the hamlet and able to join the battle to free the peasants.

All of the player-characters survived the combat, and the forces of Regmar were either slain or captured. The exceptions were Regmar himself, who never reappeared from his duel with Athras, and his sons, who were commanded to leave the area (seeing as they were too young to fight).

Donecus heard the voice of Minerva, the Witch of Raven Wood, in his head, telling him to get a sample of blood from the tip of Athras’ spear. She revealed that Regmar is the one that she expects him to eventually slay, and his blood is the ingredient to bring her for that year’s application of the ongoing enchantment of his sword.

The First Knights from the Company of the Crimson Hawk

Mini-Adventure: The Construction of Crimson Hall
All the players were present for the mini-adventure. Up until now, the squires of the Company of the Crimson Hawk have not had a place exclusively for them to use as a barracks. In light of the wondrous accomplishments of these squires, Earl Dafydd had a building constructed for this purpose, and named it Crimson Hall. The stones which compose the hearth of the fireplace contained the names of the initial members of the Company of the Crimson Hawk. Observing the construction of this building allowed the squires to make checks for Industry, Stewardship and Honor.

Historical Information about Saxons in Britain
The GM gave a brief overview of Saxon expansion in Britain up until the current timeframe of the Huntington Campaign. This information is found in the wiki document labeled, “Saxon Expansion in Britain.”

Fancy Dress Ball
A fancy dress ball (i.e., costume party) was held in Beale Valet to celebrate the upcoming knighthood ceremony. The below list shows how the couples were paired at the ball (with their costumes displayed in parentheses). Note that Donecus, Galien and Turpin all invited Solei to be their date, but (based on the Pure Companionship scores at the time) she decided to go with Turpin. Donecus ended up taking Gwendoci and Galien ended up accompanying Gerhilda. In all other cases, the squires accompanied the initial woman they invited.

All the squires failed their Dance skills. Of the two who were in shark costumes, Celsus failed his roll the worst, and so it was determined that he was “Left Shark.” This was in reference to the recent Katy Perry halftime show at Super Bowl XLIX, which featured two dancers in shark costumes. For whatever reason, the dancer on the left messed up the routine, but with an awkwardness that actually stole the show, fostering the “Left Shark” pop culture phenomenon (although probably soon to fade from the country’s collective conscious; I’ll try not to shed a tear).

As a side note, many men would have liked to have accompanied Avina, the daughter of Sir Martonus, to the ball. But Martonus requires that anyone who wants to date her must formally ask his permission in front of the statue of St. Michael within his estate at High Tower. As we now know from the squires prior to visit to High Tower (i.e., Session 6), only a person with a Christian Religious Bonus can make it far enough through the mystical barriers of the garden to reach the statue. Therefore, most potential suitors of Avina do not even try, but Athras was able to successfully meet the challenge of asking permission to take Avina to the ball in front of the enchanted statue.

Knighthood Ceremony & Initial Quests
A.D. 501 saw the first set of Crimson Hawk squires being knighted. The ceremony took place at the castle in Beale Valet, with Earl Dafydd officially bestowing the title. The following squires took the oath and became bachelor knights (with the ceremony being likewise conducted in the Guild Hall by the GM using the Sword of Destiny).

In terms of the customary “leap” that a newly made knight attempts (i.e., leaping onto his horse while in full armor, which, in game terms, means a DEX check), all of them made it except for Donecus and Romulus.

It so happened that a number of people were in court that day imploring the earl for help with some matter. The earl had the newly made knights engage in a horse race to determine the order in which they would choose which quest they wanted to accept. The horse race was completed in the following order: 1-Galien, 2-Athras, 3-Damahaut, 4-Riorden, 5-Romulus, 6-Turpin, 7-Donecus.

The Adventure of Sir Galien & the Marsh Troll
Galien chose a quest to deal with a murdering thief known as Scary Harry. It was not until he accepted the task that the peasant who reported the incident nonchalantly revealed that Scary Harry was a marsh troll. As to be expected, Scary Harry was an extremely dangerous opponent, and in the ensuing battle Galien had to resort to drinking a potion of Aria’s Excellent Benevolence (i.e., Galien was hit for a whopping 26 points of damage). Nevertheless, he was able to knock the troll unconscious and deliver the killing blow.

The Joust Between Sir Athras & Sir Eldgrim
Sir Eldgrim, formerly a squire of the Company of the Iron Fist, set up a pavilion by a pond in the woods near Beale Valet. He denounced the prowess and courage of Huntington knights (he actually used the word “cretins”), and claimed he would take on all challengers. A Huntington knight named Sir Cadwy was bested and sorely wounded in a joust with him, and his squire came to Beale Valet to report the incident. Seeing as Athras defeated Eldgrim two years earlier in the Honorable Challenge of the Huntington & Brun Squires (see the description of Session 5), he elected to accept this quest. History repeated itself, as Athras was once again victorious over Eldgrim.

The Adventure of Sir Damahaut & the Baby Snatcher
A peasant couple named Bowen and Wynne implored Damahaut to rescue their baby from an elven creature named Drystan of the World of Mists. Drystan challenged Damahaut to answer a riddle, promising to return the child if he guessed the answer correctly. But if he failed then the baby would remain in the World of Mists forever. Damahaut had no trouble in guessing the riddle and the baby was saved.

The Adventure of Sir Riorden & the Ghost Dog
A peasant boy named Tomat told the story of his father, Walter, who was a renowned hunter. Walter went after a huge boar but neither he nor his pack of hounds returned. After this, a ghostly wolf was occasionally seen in the woods at night. Riorden agreed to undertake this quest and solve the mystery. He discovered that the phantom canine was not a wolf, but a hound (no one prior to this was brave enough to get a close look at the apparition). More specifically, this was the ghost of Walter’s most faithful hound, and it led Riorden to the spot where the bodies of Walter and the dogs were. The remains still lay in the spot where they had been savagely killed by the boar. Around Walter’s neck was an iron key on a cord which unlocked a secret cash box at the home of Tomat and his mother (they were previously unaware that Walter had been putting away money for their future). The ghost dog’s mission was to scare the boar away from the area until someone could recover the key and save Tomat and his mother from destitution. Having done so, this phantom was never seen again. Riorden successfully met the various challenges of this quest, including controlling his fear in order to follow the ghost dog, spotting the key and finding the secret chest. He also made sure that Walter and his hounds were properly buried.

The Adventure of Sir Romulus & the Three Maidens
A nun named Sister Emmot led Romulus to three maidens, each requesting assistance. He was told that he could only pick one of these quests. The youngest of the three was Gwendoci (see same who danced with Donecus at the fancy dress ball) who lost her golden comb in a muddy area. She insisted that her beautiful hair was too precious to be touched by combs of lesser quality, and obviously she wasn’t going to root around in the muck to find it. If Romulus found her comb, she promised to arrange for him to get a great deal on one of her father’s famous warhorses, and put in a good word for him if he requested to pursue Pure Companionship with her. Gwendoci considered this an urgent situation because her hair was “mussed” and she could not be seen in public until it was properly combed.

The second maiden was Lady Lessent of Lonazep County. Her husband was the late Sir Hemmet who once put down a peasant rebellion. As a deterrent to any future rebellions, Hemmet made an example out of the leader of the rebellion, a farmer named Colley, and his family. Colley was beheaded and his skull was turned into a drinking goblet while his wife and children were hanged. Hemmet recently died and the drinking goblet was stolen. Lessent suspects that the theft was perpetrated by Colley’s family who wanted to reunite Colley’s skull with his other remains. She offered Romulus a bag of 150 d. to retrieve the goblet.

The third maiden was a poor widow named Millis. Her lord fled the area of her village due to the Saxon encroachment, and a savage bear was ravaging her farm and livestock. The other villagers coveted her land and refused to help, hoping that she would leave. She wanted Romulus to kill the bear but was too poor to offer any reward.

Romulus decided to accept the quest presented by Millis, and he successfully tracked down and slew the bear. In so doing, he succeeded in an even greater test, which was a test of chivalry. He was not motivated by a reward, but instead chose the quest involving the greatest danger to the weakest person.

The Adventure of Sir Turpin & the Brigands
One of the earl’s cattle hands reported that three brigands (part of the band of miscreants who follow Regmar the Brigand King) have stolen some of the earl’s cows. Turpin tracked them down. After refusing their demand to surrender, Turpin fought all three of them at once. He killed one of them and knocked the leader of the band unconscious. The third surrendered. Turpin successfully completed this quest by dealing justice to the outlaws and returning the stolen cattle.

The Horse Race Between Sir Donecus & Sir Ladras
Donecus accepted a challenge from a knight named Sir Ladras in terms of a horse race. Ladras promised to give Donecus a fine new saddle if he beat him. Although Donecus rode with great skill, and the race was close, Ladras won.

The Brawl in Crimson Hall
Celsus and Jaufre went to Crimson Hall to meet the new squires of the Company of the Crimson Hawk. One of them, Tagras, declared himself to be in charge (as Squire of the Pool) and had a big squire named Vad the Mad acting as his enforcer. As far as Tagras was concerned, the reported exploits of Jaufre and Celsus, as well as those of all the founding members of the Company of the Crimson Hawk, were just a bunch of hyperbole. He claimed that he and Vad the Mad possessed true prowess and demanded that Celsus and Jaufre show them proper respect and obedience. Naturally, Celsus and Jaufre did not accept any of this, and a duel ensued with all the other new squires looking on. Jaufre squared off against Vad while Celsus pitted himself against Tagras. Celsus was knocked down, but Jaufre managed to defeat both of the boastful upstarts. The other squires declared Jaufre to be the real Squire of the Pool.

Sir Donecus & the Witch
Sir Donecus continued to meet with Minerva (i.e., the Witch of Raven Wood) annually in order to provide her with ingredients for the ongoing enchantment of his sword.

A Ransom for Sir Emeric

Epilogue of Session 5
The session for A.D. 499 ended with the Lady Ester using some sort of enchantment to visit Galien and Turpin in their sleep. Galien resisted her charms, but Turpin did not. Because Ester’s lavender perfume could be discerned in their bedchambers upon waking, it was quite possible that she was somehow actually there in person. As part of the epilogue of Session 5, it was determined that both Galien and Turpin shared the information with the rest of the squires, as well as with the maiden Solei (whom both have a Pure Companionship relationship with).

Mini-Adventure: A Strange Winter for Sir Edam

In the winter of A.D. 500, Sir Edam started showing signs of strange behavior. First, he took some of the squires into the forest to hunt “wild snowmen” (they didn’t find any). Then he announced that he had cataloged the language of hound dogs, which the squires were expected to learn and practice at the dinner table. And this was followed by a bizarre cooking lesson, in which he attempted to roast a bunch of chickens on a spear while instructing the squires to widen the castle’s hearth with a sledge hammer (fortunately Sir Gorn sans Humour, the earl’s butler, arrived in time to put a stop to it). Evidently, the curse of the Witch of Raven Wood was starting to take hold of Sir Edam, just as it once did to his friends Sir Tilvor and Sir Lester.

Squire Donecus and the Witch
While hunting in the Savauge Forest, Donecus became separated from the rest of the group in a mist. He came across a pristine-looking cottage with a light in the window. He remembered hearing rumors that the cottage of the Witch of Raven Wood was spotted (in recent years) by hunters in the Savauge Forest. This cottage used to be located in a wooded area on the outskirts of Beale Valet. There was a time when it was believed that the witch was dead, and the cottage had become dilapidated. This was the building torn down by Sir Edam, Sir Tilvor and Sir Lester in their project to build a feast hall. Consequently, this action was believed to be what triggered the curse that brought madness and death upon Tilvor and Lester, and is apparently at work on Edam as well. For more details on all this, see the Rumors for A.D. 495 & 496 in this adventure log.

Donecus entered the cottage and discovered a middle-aged woman who identified herself as Minerva, also claiming to be the Witch of Raven Wood. She knew who Donecus was without the benefit of an introduction. She claimed to be neither good nor evil, but, like nature itself, sought a balance of forces. She was concerned of a growing evil in the woods to the south, and asked Donecus to be her champion in eliminating this evil. She did not reveal the name of this evil, nor give any real description of it. The time was not yet right to strike, but if Donecus was willing, she would begin the slow process of enchanting his sword.

As a sign of her good intentions, she told Donecus the means by which Sir Edam could be cured of the curse she placed on him. She also noted that she thought he had suffered enough, and that justice had been done over the destruction of her old cottage (and the rare and valuable arcane ingredients that were located there). According to Minerva, Edam should be taken to Ramsey Abbey for the Easter Vigil Mass. There they would meet a red-haired vassal knight named Sir Martonus of the Estate of High Tower. Martonus had a garden with an enchanted statue of St. Michael the Archangel that had healing powers, including the ability to lift curses. Moreover, the group should take a letter from Earl Dafydd requesting this to be done for Edam.

Donecus agreed to be Minerva’s champion, and she gave him a magic tea to drink which granted him the skill of Herbalism / Elementalism. Note that this is not the ability to do alchemy, but simply gives him the knowledge of how to identify and gather herbs and minerals. She told him to bring her “the stone that burns” (i.e., sulfur). When he left the cottage, he noticed that it no longer appeared pristine, but rather an old, dark dilapidated building.

Later in the year, Donecus returned with the sulfur. Once again, while in the Savauge Forest he found himself surrounded by mist, and this event led him to another meeting with Minerva in her newly looking house. She burned the sulfur in a bowl and waved Donecus’ sword over it, while chanting arcane phrases. This was a bonding spell, and only the first part of the ritual. He was to return to her once a year with newly assigned items, until the whole process was complete. Then Donecus would be ready to confront the evil that Minerva spoke about, and he would have the right sword to get the job done.

Squire Training
Once again the squires’ training involved studies with Theronde the Sage. He gave lectures on battle based on passages of “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius.

High Tower and the Statue of St. Michael the Archangel
As instructed by Minerva, the squires got a letter from Earl Dafydd and accompanied Sir Edam to Ramsey Abbey. The morning they were to depart to Ramsey Abbey, it was discovered that Edam had burned his mace in a fireplace because “it was speaking heresies! And we burn heretics!” Ramsey Abbey is a Benedictine monastery and feudal estate in the northwest section of Huntington County. It was also the location of the mysterious robbery of a golden chalice inlaid with emeralds (see “New Rumor” under A.D. 499 in this adventure log). At the Easter Vigil Mass, they met Abbot Leovian (considered the feudal lord of this area) and Sir Martonus, a widower who is a vassal knight in the service of Ramsey Abbey. They also met Martonus’ son, Squire Algus (age 20), and daughter, the Lady Avina (age 15).

A Ransom Demand from King Octa
As we know from the background of the Huntington Campaign, Sir Emeric (the father of Squire Dragan) and Sir Taurinus (the father of Squire Donecus) have been missing in action since the year A.D. 493. They disappeared after pursuing the Saxon Kings Octa and Eosa into Windsor Forest. In A.D. 499, a rumor was heard that Sir Emeric was being held somewhere in the southeast part of Britain. Now, in A.D. 500, a messenger from King Octa arrived in Beale Valet demanding a ransom for Sir Emeric.

Ordinarily, feudal lords do not pay ransoms for mercenary knights, so that responsibility would fall upon the knight’s family, and many such families did not have those kind of funds. Hence, mercenary knights were typically not ransomed. But Earl Dafydd had accepted Dragan as a retainer in his household, with the promise of eventually making him a bachelor knight, so he decided to treat Emeric as one of his own. He agreed to pay a bachelor knight’s ransom for Emeric, which was 12 L. Due to the scarcity of gold coins, a chest was filled with the equivalent in silver, being 240 shillings.

Damahaut and Turpin were sent to get a big chain from the blacksmiths: Valter, Hamon and Halblet. The blacksmiths acted as psychotic as ever. Thinking that the commissioned chain was to be used to lock of prisoners, they suggested that it was better to simply kill prisoners rather than having to feed them and care for them in the dungeon. Because knights are obviously too busy with important business to deal with such matters, the blacksmiths offered to act as the executioners of Beale Valet. More specifically, Valter wanted to be known as the “High Lord Executioner”, and Hamon wanted to be the “Honorable Assistant to the High Lord Executioner”, and Hablet wanted to be the “Honorable Guy Who Grabs People By the Throat and Chokes the Life Out of Them!” They asked the squires to kindly pass along their offer to the earl.

In Earl Dafydd’s court, the silver was placed in a locked chest, and the chest was wrapped with the chain which was secured with a padlock. The next day the chest was loaded on a wagon. According to the stipulations of the ransom demand, no more than 11 men were to deliver the silver, of whom only three could be knights. They were to take the wagon to Sycamore Castle, a motte and baily fortification in the northwest part of Essex County. The exact exchange was to take place in the baily (the keep on the motte was just a burned out shell, having been destroyed in the recent Saxon Wars). Horses were not to be brought into the baily. The Saxons meeting them at Sycamore Castle were to abide by the same restrictions.

Sir Edam, sporting a brand new mace, was chosen to lead the party. The other two knights were Sir Gerente and Sir Arhan of the Axe. The remaining 8 men sent were the squires of the Company of the Crimson Hawk, minus Riorden. Prior to leaving, Solei gave Turpin, Galien and Donecus (i.e., the three squires who had been seeing her in the context of Pure Companionship) each a healing potion called Essence of Bryony.

The wagon was taken to the baily of Sycamore Castle, wherein a group of Saxons awaited them: Sir Baldwine (the leader), Sir Eadred, Sir Wigstan, one berserker and 9 warriors. Sir Emeric was being held in the ruins of the keep for the moment. The padlock on the chain was removed, and the chest was opened, but instead of a pile of silver coins all that was in the chest was a bunch of rocks! Baldwine shouted, “Treachery!” and battle ensued.

After a heated fight, Sir Baldwine was struck a major wound by Sir Edam. He failed his Valorous roll and then made his Cowardly! Hence, Baldwine surrendered and, being the leader of the Saxon party, ordered his side to surrender as well. It should be noted that four of his fellow Saxons had been knocked unconscious by this point, including Sir Wigstan and the berserker, whereas all of the group from Beale Valet were still in fighting form. Sir Emeric was freed, and all the Saxons were taken to Huntington County as prisoners.

The Story of Sir Taurinus
Sir Emeric revealed that back in A.D. 493, he and Sir Taurinus were waylaid by a group of Saxons in Windsor Forest who were guarding the escape route of kings Octa and Eosa. They were imprisoned in a fortress in the southeast.

During that time, Taurinus despaired of ever being ransomed, and denigrated the life of a mercenary knight. He declared, “We constantly risk our lives for a handful of coins! It’s just not worth it!” A few months after he was imprisoned, Taurinus managed to escape but Emeric has no idea what has become of him.

The Arrival of Owen and the Revelation of the Events of Lady Ester & the Estate of Lonely Elm
A short, squat, raggedy looking fellow arrived in Beale Valet seeking sanctuary. His name was Owen and he had spent the past few years working as an herbalist for Lady Ester. Now he was on the run, saying that Ester tried to have him killed by a demon! Through Owen, the squires were finally able to hear the story behind the mysterious events of the Estate of Lonely Elm (see Session #3, A.D. 497). Here then is his story:

Lady Ester basically hated her parents, Sir Wymark and Lady Duriana. They discovered that she was practicing the dark arts and burned her spell books, but this did not stop her. Next her parents tried to marry her off to an ugly knight, so she came up with a plan to kill them.

She chose Halloween night of A.D. 496 to carry out the dastardly deed, because that was when the whole family was determined to witness the manifestation of the ghost of Sir Warrenus. That night Ester killed her parents with an axe, hoping that the phantom would be blamed for the deed. But the townspeople always suspected that she was not right in the head, so rumors tended to point the finger at her as being the culprit. Lacking better evidence, the official report from the sheriff was that a Saxon marauder had committed the murders.

For her next scheme, Ester invited the squires to come to the Estate of Lonely Elm to witness the apparition of the ghost of Sir Warrenus (and this was the basis of the adventure of Huntington Campaign Session 3). She used magical illusions to try to terrify the squires with various supernatural events in hopes that they would spread the word that the manor house was not only haunted, but horribly so! Ester figured that with such a dire reputation, suspicion of the murder of her parents would fall upon whatever evil spirits presumably possessed the house. Nevertheless, local society still treated her as a pariah.

The squires informed Ester of the clue that the ghost of Sir Warrenus gave (i.e., he traced the image of an “ohn” rune from Ogham) and she decided to look into this deeper, although she never shared the details with Owen. Last year, she ventured into the Fens for two days and then returned.

Next Ester spoke to Owen of getting a new start in life, and took him and her essential belongings into the Fens where they encountered the Unholy Raiders. They warmly greeted her but treated Owen with suspicion, blindfolding him and leading him deeper in the Fens. At one point, he could tell that he was sloshing through knee deep water as if walking across a submerged bridge fashioned from logs.

When his blindfold was removed, he found himself in the legendary town of Boston, populated with men, women and children. Their king, Darrowmere, was old and decrepit. He was a widower who had no children, and the people questioned his virility. The king accepted Ester as his new bride and they were wed. Shortly after this, Ester announced that she had conceived. A few weeks after that, Darrowmere died of Marsh Fever, resulting in Ester being the sole reigning monarch in Boston. Eventually she gave birth to triplets: two sons and a daughter (Konwen, Loic and Maellis).

Unfortunately for Owen, the Unholy Raiders of Boston continued to treat him as an outsider. He had to live confined in a building on the edge of town, and rarely was allowed to go in public. Even then, such outings were brief, and he was always escorted by some of the raiders.

He also began to fear for his life because he alone (having been Ester’s confidant for years) knew that the secret concerning the children of Ester. Their father was not truly King Darrowmere, but rather Squire Turpin! She wanted to make sure that her children had the blood of a champion in them, so she used the Honorable Challenge of the Huntington and Brun Squires to find a proper father (see Huntington Campaign Session 5). Using magic, Ester transported herself into the bedchamber of Squire Galien, who won first place at the contest. She appeared to him in the form of a dream, but involving actual physical contact, but he chastely resisted her advances which completely broke the spell. Because Squire Turpin won second place, she targeted him next, and he succumbed to her charms and her enchantments. It was then that the triplets were conceived.

Ester has become more diabolical over time, and apparently more mentally unbalanced. As Queen of Boston, she started envisioning conquering Britain and actually summoned a horned, bat-winged demon to help in this endeavor! Owen was brought there to be the human sacrifice that the demon required, but it looked with disdain upon him, shouting, “You call this toad of a man a worthy sacrifice? Away with him!” Owen was surrounded by a black cloud and the smell of sulfur, and appeared on the outskirts of the Fens. He stayed on the run, fearing for his life, and eventually made his way to Beale Valet to not only seek sanctuary, but to also warn the squires of the Company of the Crimson Hawk. After all, they possess a lot of knowledge that Ester would like to remain secret, such as the clue left by the ghost of Sir Warrenus, and her nocturnal visit to Turpin. Plus, she knows that they have the potential to be great knights who could thwart her plans of leading the Unholy Raiders in an invasion of Britain.

Earl Dafydd has granted Owen sanctuary, and Theronde the Sage decided to employ him in his capacity as an herbalist.

In the court of Earl Dafydd, the squires witnessed the earl officially designating Sir Galadorn as the new marshal of the County of Huntington. This means that he is now the commander of the county’s military in terms of forces in the field, the soldiers who protect the Castle of Beale Valet, and those who act as escort for the earl and his family. This promotion included Sir Galadorn being given the Estate of Doerun as a gift (which means the ownership of it reverts back to the earl upon the death of Sir Galadorn).

While at court, the squires discerned that Squire Riorden caused quite a bit of talk among the courtiers when the word got out that he bought a palfrey for the Maiden Willow. It was, indeed, a noble gift, and an unexpected one from an Irishman (given the fact that the Irish are typically characterized as being impoverished; fortunately, Riorden had an extra charger and did some horse trading with the earl).

Update on Old Rumors
The Fate of the Fathers:
Sir Emeric (the father of Dragan) and Sir Taurinus (the father of Donecus) are still missing after they set out in vain hope of recapturing the Saxon kings, Octa and Eosa, after their prison break in A.D. 493. There is a rumor that Sir Emeric is being held by King Octa somewhere in the Saxon controlled area of Britain in the south-east.

The Sword in the Stone:
Since A.D. 496, nobles have gathered at the Church of St. Paul in London in an attempt to draw Excalibur from the anvil and stone, and therefore being acknowledged as the king of Britain. So far, no one has succeeded.

Regmar the Brigand King:
Sporadic reports are still heard about Regmar the Brigand King and his rowdy men. They continue to waylay travelers around the area of Landoine Forest.

Recap of Stolen Property (all thefts committed in Beale Valet):
A.D. 495: Gold & silver chalices, patons & candlestick holders stolen from the Church of the Sacred Heart. A.D. 496: A jewel-encrusted dagger stolen from Sir Gorn sans Humour, the earl’s butler.
None of these items have been recovered yet.

New Rumor
Ramsey Abbey (northeast of Beale Valet) has reported the theft of a golden chalice inlaid with emeralds. Not only is this a rare and precious treasure, it is also the very first chalice used by the monks of Ramsey Abbey when this monastery was founded. It is normally kept securely locked in a small room in the abbey’s sacristy, and was used for Mass only on special occasions. The thief or thieves responsible either had a key or were able to pick the lock, and no perpetrators have been identified yet.

Squire Training & the Prophecy of Caesennia
The squires had another run in with the Blacksmiths of Beale Valet: Valter, Hamon and Hablet. They were testing a new mace design and debating whether or not killing with a garrote is honorable (or manly). The behavior of this trio was characteristically psychotic.

Earl Dafydd hired a wandering sage to stay in Beale Valet for awhile and tend to the education of the squires. He is a middle-aged man named Theronde. The Latin studies for the squires included translating the Prophecy of Caesennia, which was dated to about A.D. 170. Caesennia of Silchester was known to be a Christian mystic, being a British-Roman woman who served in the court of the British king Lucius in the mid-2nd Century. Note that Lucius is mentioned in the campaigns timeline as being the one responsible for spreading Christianity in the British Isles.

The Prophecy of Caesennia reads as follows:

“The bright southern city shall not long survive
the death of its founder.
Sons of barbarians and the wild forest dwellers
shall eat away ravaged civilization.
Hope can endure in the glory of a resurrected land.
Vigilance and devoted arms must be its defenders.
Let the brave gather on Casterton Fell.
Let Lonsdale be guarded by the lions of men.”

Theronde told the squires, “Remember this prophecy. Teach it to your sons.”

The Honorable Challenge of the Squires
A mysterious noblewoman named Lady Elidia teamed up with Earl Dafydd to host a contest to discover who the best squires are from the County of Huntington and the Barony of Brun. Three chests were available as rewards, going to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place. the Lady Ester was in attendance wearing the latest thing from France: perfume! Her perfume was lavender scented.

The first part of the challenge involved one-on-one duels (non-lethal) with the Company of the Iron Fist from the Barony of Brun. These matches were as follows:

Damahaut vs. Pavain: Damahaut won
Jaufre vs. Drust: Jaufre won
Galien vs. Haveron: Galien won
Celsus vs. Kenmark: Celsus won
Turpin vs. Marrand: Turpin won
Romulus vs. Radulf: Romulus won
Riorden vs. Torhall: Torhall won
Donecus vs. Christofarus: Christofarus won
Athras vs. Eldgrim: Athras won

Because Donecus and Riorden lost their duels, they were eliminated from the challenge. Each squire who won his duel was then allowed to select one of three paths. At the entrance to each path was a herald, who delivered a rhyme.

The first herald had a banner depicting a canyon, and he said:
“Get the Last Rites and sign your wills,
for this path will test your martial skills.”

The second herald had a banner depicting a hill, and he said:
“This is the path for the strong and agile,
or your chance for success is very fragile.”

The third herald had a banner depicting a forest, and he said:
“Whether armed with a spear or bow,
your hunting skills you’ll have to show.”

Athras, Damahaut and Galien chose the canyon path. Therein they met a group of riders who identified themselves as the Riddling Horsemen. To be allowed to continue through the narrow canyon, each squire had to earn the right by either correcting guessing a riddle or defeating a rider in a joust (best two out of three).

Galien was asked, “What’s black when you get it, red when you use it, and white when you’re all through with it?” He correctly guessed “Charcoal” and was allowed to pass.

Athras was asked, “At night they come without being fetched. By day they are lost without being stolen. What are they?” He answered, “Dreams” but although that was certainly a good guess, the correct answer was, “Stars.”

Therefore, Athras had to joust but lost, and therefore was eliminated in the contest.

Jaufre was asked, “With thieves I consort, with the vilest, in short. I’m quite at ease in depravity; yet all divines use me, and savants can’t lose me, because I am the center of gravity.” Jaufre had no answer (the answer was the letter “v”) and also lost the joust, resulting in his elimination from the contest.

Damahaut, Celsus and Turpin chose the hill path. They had to cross a mossy log which spanned a creek and then help rebuild the walls of a dilapidated shrine before the Angelis bell was rung at noon. Then they had to climb a steep, rocky hill. These feats tested such things as Dexterity, Strength and Energetic, and they were all successful.

Romulus, Christofarus and Torhall chose the forest path, wherein they had to engage in a hunting contest. Each was allowed to choose either hunting with a spear or a bow, and they all chose the former. Nevertheless, while hunting for wild pig their prey managed to elude them, and all three squires were eliminated from the contest.

Having succeeded in the first three challenges, Damahaut, Celsus, Galien and Turpin were permitted to engage in the final phase, which was a horse race. It was very close. Galien came in 1st Place, Turpin in 2nd Place, Damahaut in 3rd Place, and Celsus in 4th Place. Consequently, Galien won the large treasure chest, Turpin won the medium one, and Damahaut won the small. The chests contained denari and magic potions for the squires, as well as snacks and restaurant gift cards for the players.

It should also be noted that the squires of the Company of the Crimson Hawk demonstrated superiority over the Company of the Iron Fist. Although two of the Brun squires won the duel, none of them made it to the final horse race.

Lady Ester’s Enchanted Nocturnal Visits
That night, Galien had a dream that the Lady Ester visited him and tried to seduce him. He was able to remain steadfast and chaste, and resisted her attempt. Then Turpin had the same dream, but succumbed to her charms. When both squires woke, they realized it was a dream, but nevertheless smelled the scent of lavender in their rooms (which was the kind of perfume Ester had been wearing that day). Were these nocturnal visits truly a dream?

The Savannah Pendragon League’s Christmas Feast
This Session was also a special Christmas celebration for the Savannah Pendragon League. We feasted on Zaxby’s chicken fingers and plenty of other snacks. Moreover, thanks to the kindness and generosity of Robbie W., Santa came for a visit giving each of us a special gift.

Marauders Come to Huntington

Mini-Adventure: The Stuck Wagon
The following players were present and ready to play at 7:00 p.m. and were able to participate in the “Adventure of the Stuck Wagon”:
Turpin, Galien & Damahaut

Recent heavy rains had turned some of the roads into a boggy morass. During this mini-adventure, the squires noticed a wagon stuck in the mud, with a peasant and his cart horse unable to free it. Even though nobles do not typically involve themselves in the laborious affairs of peasants, the squires noticed that the crates on the wagon bore the heraldry of Lord Galadorn. These were items belonging to the Galadorn family which were sent to be safely stored in a neighboring county a few years ago when the Saxon threat in Southports was looming. Now that Lord Galadorn is, more or less, firmly established in Beale Valet, he sent for them. The squires decided to help the peasant and freed the wagon. Although such an endeavor does not generate Glory Points, this made a good impression upon the Galadorn family. The squires were also were permitted to make Honor, Generous, Industry and Strength rolls.

Squire Training
This year, the players were able to choose from different sets of activities to focus their training. For example, duties in the court of the earl allowed one to attempt Prudent, Loyalty (lord), Honor and Intrigue rolls.

In addition to this, each squire received training in the use of the bow. Even though fighting with a bow is considered dishonorable amongst the nobility, it is prized by nobles as a hunting weapon, as well as for sport (i.e., archery contests).

Research
As a follow-up to Session 4’s adventure (“The Phantom of Lonely Elm”), the squires divided into three groups in order to glean information from certain knowledgeable people:

Master Gunterius (a sage who has studied supernatural phenomena): Athras and Galien went here. Gunterius reported that whereas the appearance of the ghost of Sir Warrenus sounded like an authentic haunting (by a human spirit), all the other mysterious events that happened that Halloween night at the Manor of Lonely Elm sounded like magic. More specifically, either glamour, illusions or things implanted into ones dreams. Human ghosts do not cast spells, unless they were spell-casters in their former lives. Seeing as this was very unlikely the case with Sir Warrenus, it appears that a spell-caster was somehow involved with the events of the night in question, the possible goal being to frighten the squires and make others reluctant to venture forth into the haunted house.

Nob (a woodcutter who is familiar with the Fens): Celsus, Riorden and Romulus went here. Nob provided a general description of the Fens and explained why they are dangerous to traverse. Not only is there quicksand, black water with hidden currents, bogs and thick fog, but there are also stories of malicious faeries.

The squires were keen to know about the nature of ash trees within the Fens, seeing as how the phantom of Sir Warrenus traced an “ohn” rune (which is a rune that is associated with ash trees). The Fens contain a lot of tall grass, shrubbery, and small trees, but ash trees, generally speaking, are too tall to grow therein. Moreover, ash trees require well-drained soil in order to thrive, a condition not typically found in the Fens. He has personally never seen an ash tree in that region. Trees that are, however, indigenous to the Fens are the willow, alder (such as the alder buckthorn), sallow and downy birch.

Nob also told the squires about Ely Island which is in the heart of the Fens. It is completely surrounded by water, deep mud and scattered areas of quicksand. Basically, it cannot be reached except by boat, and even then it gets tricky determining exactly where to disembark from the vessel. Nob has never attempted to gain access to the Ely Island.

In terms of human dwellings, there is an old legend about a town called Boston, inhabited by those who (naturally) prize their privacy. But surely people living in the middle of the Fens would need to engage in trade outside the Fens for a number of necessary goods, but no such trade exists. This leads Nob and many others to believe that Boston is just a myth.

Lady Yvette (wife of a vassal knight who recently moved to Beale Valet from the Village of Langster): Damahaut, Turpin, and Jaufre went here to get information about the family of Sir Wymark (i.e., the late son of Sir Warrenus, and the father of Mariel & Ester). Yvette said that the local gossip typically says that Ester killed her mother and father. Even prior to this, she was known to be an erratic and odd-minded person. For example, she tended to make morbid and inappropriate comments. Ester was also suspected of being a thief who pilfered objects from the marketplace. Given her noble station and lack of proof, no one ever formally accused her of any crime, but she is pretty much guilty in the court of public opinion. People give her the respect that is due her station, but otherwise shun her. Yvette thinks that Ester should move to away to a distant place and try to start a new life.

The Feast in Langster, Part 1: The Hunting Contest
Sir Haberlet, the appointed guardian of Mariel and Ester, invited Sir Edam and the Company of the Crimson Hawk to a feast at his manor house near the Village of Langster. This was to thank the squires for trying to solve the mystery behind the hauntings at Lonely Elm. In preparation for the feast, Sir Edam proposed that the squires used their newly-found bow skills to engage in a hunting contest.

The squires split up and selected different areas east of Langster to stalk their prey. Romulus flushed a temperamental boar which then engaged him in combat, striking Romulus with a major wound. Romulus survived the encounter, but he was unconscious for the remainder of the adventure. Turpin won the hunting contest by bagging a 13 lb. goose.

The Feast in Langster, Part 2 – The Marauding Saxons
Prior to returning to Langster from their hunting trip, the squires rendezvoused in a forest clearing. On their journey back, they came across a cottage with a number of slain peasants. Some had been killed, and some had been “killed a lot.” Several boot prints were discovered leading from the cottage into the thick woods. Utilizing some of the pages that accompanied them, the squires sent Romulus back to Langster for medical treatment, and left their horses at the cottage in order to follow the murderous culprits (i.e., the woods in this area were too thick for mounted travel).

Presently the squires came upon a band of nine marauding Saxons, including a huge war party leader and a berserker. Evidently, they had journeyed from the Saxon territories of the southeast, using thick wooded areas to mask their movement and prevent being intercepted by mounted opponents. The Company of the Crimson Hawk were given the decision to either attack or go and inform the sheriff of Langster (and then and lead a larger group of armed men to the area). Fearing that the Saxons would be long gone if they chose the latter, the squires attacked! A heated battle ensued, with the Company of the Crimson Hawk prevailing. Nevertheless, some of the squires were badly injured, but all survived. Administering swift justice and retribution to this lawless band of murderous barbarians further added to growing reputation of the Company of the Crimson Hawk.

The Feast in Langster, Part 3 – The Dinner Party
During the big feast at the manor house of Sir Haberlet, the squires were heartily congratulated for their exploits against the Saxons, and Turpin was congratulated for winning the hunting contest. The Lady Ester asked the squires what they had discovered thus far concerning the ohn rune traced by Sir Warrenus. The squires related to her what they had learned from Master Gunterius and Nob the Woodcutter. Naturally, they prudently did not share the gossip gleaned from the Lady Yvette.

Rumor Update
Concerning the various items reported stolen over the past two years, none of them have been recovered, and the thief (or thieves) has not yet been identified. No thefts were reported for the year of A.D. 497.

Pure Companionship
Squires were given the option to pursue Pure Companionship with one of the daughters of Lord Galadorn (at this time, these are the only maidens of noble blood in the area of the proper age for such endeavors with the characters). This year the following squires openly declared the following Pure Companionship relationships:

Turpin with Solei
Riorden with Willow
Keep in mind that this represents formal, open declarations of ones interests. Other squires may also be pursuing Pure Companionship through the secretive version of it. Special Training with Sir Belfan
Sir Adam arranged for a retired marshal, Sir Belfan, to visit Beale Valet and give the Company of the Crimson Hawk intense weapon and combat training. Some of the squires elected to forego some of this training in order to pursue Pure Companionship.

The Mid-Summer Parade & Feast
The squires were given the opportunity to participate in a special parade and feast celebrating Mid-Summer’s Day. Each squire was given the choice to either go hunting in preparation of the feast, be a part of the Honor Guard (which escorted the Eucharistic Procession), or assist the peasants in parade preparations and then being a member of the parade’s Mounted Guard. Each task allowed specific skill rolls.

Galien and Turpin decided to go hunting. Later at the celebration they noticed that Solei looked approvingly upon those who helped provide for the feast.

Damahaut, Celsus, Dragan, Riorden, Jaufre & Athras chose to be part of the Honor Guard during the Eucharistic Procession. They noticed that Joanette looked approvingly upon those who elected to serve on the Honor Guard.

Romulus, Aengus & Donecus elected to assist the peasants and be part of the Mounted Guard. They noticed that Willow looked approvingly upon those who participated in such an artistic endeavor.

A Spooky Adventure in the Estate of Lonely Elm
(Inspired by the legends associated with the Lizzie Borden House)
This adventure took place in the County of Huntington, in the Village of Langster (although not on the game map, it is located between Beale Valet and Cambridge), at the Estate of Lonely Elm.

The History of the Estate of Lonely Elm, and the Fate of Sir Warrenus:
The manor house of Lonely Elm was built by Sir Warrenus & Lady Bella. He was a vassal knight who died under mysterious circumstances. The Village of Langster was being attacked by brigands donned in black cloaks who proved themselves to be powerful and savage warriors. They came to known as the Unholy Raiders. The headquarters of these raiders is secretly located somewhere within the vast Fens to the northeast. Despite several battles between the raiders and the local knights and men-at-arms, there is no record of any of the raiders ever being killed or captured. This has led to a widespread rumor that they live a charmed life, possibly being in league with the devil himself and are protected by black magic.

In A.D. 490, on Halloween, Sir Warrenus led a large band of soldiers into the Fens to find the raiders and kill them. Only three of the soldiers returned, all of whom were severely injured and terrified by what happened. According to their statements, Sir Warrenus believed (for undisclosed reasons) that the lair of the raiders was located on Ely Isle within the Fens. Dark water with mysterious currents and deep mud act as natural barriers between Ely Isle and the rest of the Fens. Several of the soldiers drown in quicksand while trying to find a ford.

Before they could find a safe way to cross to Ely Isle, their camp was set upon at night by the raiders. Sir Warrenus and most of his men were slain almost instantly. Only a few soldiers escaped the battle. Most of those who fled were hunted down by the raiders and ended up never leaving the Fens alive. Three survived to tell the tale. Because it was at night and the raiders wore black hooded cloaks, they did not get a good look at the villains. But they did notice that all the raiders wore a wooden emblem around their necks depicting a skull with a dagger thrust vertically through it.

The bodies of Sir Warrenus and the other slain men were never recovered. Despite the success of the Unholy Raiders, for some reason they ceased their raids on Langster after this point.

The son of Sir Warrenus, Sir Wymark, inherited the Estate of Lonely Elm. His family is composed of his wife, Lady Duriana, and their two daughter, Lady Mariel & Lady Ester. Mariel is the eldest child.

The Haunting of Lonely Elm:
Since the death of Sir Warrenus, the family and servants of Lonely Elm have come to believe that the estate is haunted. Eerie things have occurred both within the manor house and around the grounds. For example: Phantom children heard laughing and playing and there are sudden hot and cold spots. Willow wisps appear and disappear, and unexplained footsteps are sometimes heard upon the stairs.

The most striking phenomenon is the annual appearance of what is called the Phantom of Lonely Elm. Each Halloween night, the ghost of Sir Warrenus appears, all bedraggled and covered with dripping muck from the fens. Those who witnessed this apparition say that the phantom slowly raised his hand and pointed at them accusingly.

According to the stories, the Phantom of Lonely Elm is likely to appear anywhere inside the manor house or on the grounds surrounding the house. Very few people have spotted it because, presumably, there have been Halloweens when he appeared in a spot where there were no witnesses. The few people who actually saw it do not know what the phantom does after he points at them, because they ran in terror.

On Halloween of A.D. 496, Sir Wymark and his family decided to solve the mystery of the Phantom of Lonely Elm. That night they spread throughout the property, determined to observe the ghost of Sir Warrenus and bravely witness all his actions. However, the following morning brought a discovery of unimaginable horror. The bloody body of Sir Wymark, who spent the night staked out in the garden maze, was discovered with his head smashed in. His wife, the Lady Duriana, was found in the master bedroom, likewise butchered. The only survivors were the two daughters, Mariel and Ester, and the servant girl, Simona. None of them reported seeing the assailant or hearing the murders.

Sir Allagard, the sheriff of Langster, determined that Wymark and Duriana were probably killed by an axe, but the murder weapon was never found. No other evidence came forth to help determine the killer or the motive.

This was the last straw for Mariel, Ester, and Simona. Simona returned to her family in Ireland, and Mariel and Ester moved to the estate of Sir Haberlet (also in the Langston area). Earl Dafydd has appointed Sir Haberlet as their guardian.

Mariel has inherited the Estate of Lonely Elm, although the manor house is unoccupied, and the peasants no longer work the grounds.

The Quest for the Company of the Crimson Hawk:
The Lady Mariel is now 23 and is unwed. Because she is the owner of a haunted estate, finding a proper suitor is problematic. The Lady Ester is now 20 and the family tragedy has likewise had a negative impact upon her. People speak of a family curse.

Sir Edam is cousin to Mariel and Ester. He wants to bring a resolution to the mystery of Lonely Elm. If the hauntings cease and the manor house is once more livable, then perhaps the stigma attached to the sisters will likewise cease, allowing them to find good husbands. Sir Edam theorizes that the Phantom of Lonely Elm is at the center of all the supernatural phenomena. If someone can witness the apparition and be brave enough not to run away, then perhaps the phantom will reveal some sort of clue that will unlock the mystery of the haunting, and allow the estate to return to normal.

Sir Edam gives the Company of the Crimson Hawk this task. In order to make sure the Phantom of Lonely Elm is encountered, the squires must spread out to cover all the rooms and the outside yards (front, back, east side, west side). Sir Edam will not actually be joining in the quest due to a prior engagement.

What Happened on Halloween Night, A.D. 497?
Each squire was stationed in a specific area, and had to spend the night alone. Nightmarish supernatural occurrences afflicted them all!

Damahaut was stationed in the Great Hall. The floor seemed to become like quick sand, with skeletal hands reaching up to drag him down. He was able to slog his way across the room to safety.

Aengus was stationed in the master bedroom. The corpse of a knight (whose face appeared smashed in, as with an axe) appeared in a rocking chair and stood up to do combat with him. Aengus was slain by the undead knight, but he woke up the next morning in full health.

Romulus was stationed in the chapel which had a stained glass window depicting a scene from the Garden of Eden. A stained glass serpent in the window animated, slithered out, and fought with him. Romulus killed the crystalline beast.

Dragan was stationed in the basement next to a door to a storage room that was always locked because the key had long been lost. During the night he noticed that this door was cracked open, and the sound of children giggling was heard inside. Upon investigation, he found the storage room filled with old toys, including a baby doll that opened its eyes, looked at him, and said, “You are going to die!” Then a man-sized clown doll shambled from the corner wielding a mace. After heated battle, Dragan defeated the murderous clown doll.

Riorden was stationed in Mariel’s old bedroom, which included a mirror on the wall and a shelf of decorative bottles, each with a different symbol. Something caused painful, burning scratches to appear on his back, and he felt that he was slowly blacking out. Examining his back in the mirror showed a star and something written in Latin. Robbie elected to use a Victory Point to read the writings, which seemed to be giving him a clue concerning which of the bottles to drink from. But he did not properly unlock the clue and Riorden ended up drinking from the wrong bottles, which poisoned him. He woke the next morning in full health, with the scratches gone.

Turpin was stationed in Ester’s old bedroom. Down the hall he heard the faint sound of children singing the following song: ""Lady Ester took an axe, Gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, She gave her father 41." And then loudly at the door he heard the voices say, “And you get 42!” Then the shadowy form of a woman with a hatchet burst through the door and attacked Turpin. It was a valiant combat, but ended up slain by this psychotic apparition. Despite getting “42 whacks”, he woke the next morning in full health.

Athras was stationed in the attic which had a full-sized looking glass. At one point during the night, the door to the attic vanished, although it was still visible in the mirror. Seeing as this was the only way out, Athras attempted to enter the mirror, and, indeed, he was able. But before he could make it to the mirror room’s door, he had to fight his own reflection. He prevailed in combat with his doppelganger, exited the mirror door, and ended up back in the actual attic room, with the attic room’s door restored.

Galien was stationed in the kitchen & pantry building, where he was set upon by some enormous spiders. They wanted to feast upon him, but he slashed them to pieces with his sword.

Jaufre was stationed outside in the garden maze, the center of which has the elm tree that the estate gets its name from. During the night, the pathways of the maze changed and there did not seem to be a way out. A raven appeared in the branches of the elm and spoke a single word, “Toad.” Finding a huge toad statue in a fountain in the maze, Jaufre climbed through its gaping mouth and was magically transported to a dark swamp. He discerned some light in the distance and correctly maneuvered his way to it. The light enveloped him and he found himself back in the garden maze, with the proper paths restored.

Celsus was stationed outside in a Romanesque portico containing a number of statues covered in ivy. Suddenly, some of the vines grabbed him and dragged him towards the clutches of a statue of Hercules. Despite trying to free himself from the ivy, the statue eventually grabbed him and crushed the life out of him. Celsus woke the next morning in full health.

Donecus was stationed outside on the lake shore. He saw ghostly images of armor-clad men underneath the dark water, and heard the voice of a woman singing from the depths. The voice promised all kinds of rewards and successfully mesmerized him. Donecus waded into the lake and drowned. Nevertheless, he woke the next morning on the grassy lawn, in full health.

As you can see, there were 11 stations, each containing a squire. Some of the squires succumbed to the supernatural attacks and were effectively rendered unconscious for the night. The GM, randomly determined which location the Phantom of Lonely Elm appeared, and naturally it was hoped that it would be in an area where one of the squires was conscious and able to witness it. Alas, the ghost of Sir Warrenus was fated to appear on the lakeshore, where Donecus was down for the count. But the GM invited one of the players to sacrifice a Victory Point to change fate, and have this apparition appear in his location. Ron immediately offered to do this, and therefore the Phantom of Lonely Elm ended up coming into the Great Hall. It raised its hand and pointed at Damahaut, but Damahaut made his Valor check and stood his ground. The ghost then passed through the squire and glided next to the wall. It turned out that when it appears each Halloween, it is not actually pointing its finger accusingly at people, but rather using its finger to trace a symbol. Therefore, Damahaut witnessed it tracing such a symbol on the wall, and then it vanished. The squires were able to discern that the symbol was the Ogham rune for the letter “ohn”, which pagans associate with an ash tree.

The Company of the Crimson Hawk now has a clue to work with. But will they be able to dispel the hauntings of the Estate of Lonely Elm? That is an adventure for another day!

Old Business
1) At the end of the last game session, the GM (being a bit rusty) forgot to grant glory awards for certain things (high traits, passions, chivalry bonus & religious bonus). Players were informed that these glory awards were added to the character sheets prior to Session 2.
2) Players asked to keep a clear and accurate record of their characters’ money.
3) Annual squire allowance of 20 d. incorporated into the game. Characters given 20 d. for A.D. 495 & will receive this amount each year during Winter Training Phase.
4) In the past the GM has used the following house rule concerning Damage Rating: STR + SIZ / 6, rounding all fractions completely down. That house rule has now been dropped, so the standard formula from the rulebook is being used (i.e., with a result of .4 or less, round down; with a result of .5 or greater, round up). The Damage Ratings on the character sheets have been checked and adjusted accordingly.

Fate of the Fathers
During character creation at Session 1, it was determined that some of the fathers of the squires are either missing or dead. The GM decided to wait until Session 2 to reveal the details concerning this:

Back in A.D. 493, the Saxon kings Octa and Eosa escaped from prison with the help of a secret attack conducted by Saxon warriors. Specifically, they were being held in a tower at a castle in Silchester.
A number of knights were killed in the attack by Saxon berserks, including:
Sir Gautier, father of Galien (John H.)
Sir Jacques, father of Turpin (James P.)
Sir Mahaut, father of Damahaut (Ron W.)

A band of knights went after the Saxons as they fled eastward. This band entered the section of Windsor Forest between Windsor Castle and Staines, but they vanished therein and have not been heard from since. This band of missing knights includes:
Sir Emeric, father of Dragan (Cody H.)
Sir Taurinus, father of Donecus (Tony G.)
Skipping forward in time a bit, Octa & Eosa were able to raise a new Saxon army which led to the Battle of St. Albans in A.D. 495.

Epilogue of the Battle of St. Albans (A.D. 495)
Due to time constraints during Session 1, the following campaign details were not presented to the players until Session 2:
1) King Uther was buried at Stonehenge next to his brother Ambrosius and his son Madoc.

2) The Company of the Crimson Hawk were able to attend the funeral along with Earl Dafydd, the Countess Lanna, and their children Faulkas and Synduil. Naturally, Sir Edam was with the company as well.

3) Attending this funeral granted 50 glory points to each character.

4) There was widespread talk that when the body of King Uther was found, his sword Excalibur was missing. This has led many to speculate that the Saxons stole it.

Rumors of A.D. 496
1) A banneret knight and his family have recently moved to Beale Valet. Their estate, Brooks Narrow in Southports, has been overrun by Saxons. This family is composed of Sir Galadorn, his wife, the Lady Lunette, and their four daughters. Their daughters are two sets of twins, although not identical: Claressant and Joanette (age 11) and Willow and Solei (age 9).

2) Excalibur, the ancient sword of the Cymric kings, has turned up again! Archbishop Dubricus of Carlion has sent a message to all the parishes in the realm that Excalibur has mysteriously appeared in the courtyard outside of the Church of St. Paul in London. Moreover, it has somehow been thrust through an anvil which is set upon a stone. Engraved upon the stone is a message saying, “Whoso pulleth this sword from this stone and anvil is likewise king born of all Britain.” The archbishop has invited all the noblemen of the realm to come to London this Christmas and attempt to draw forth Excalibur!

3) Because of the death of King Uther, rumors have naturally sprung up again over whether or not he had a child with the Lady Igraine. It is said that in the Year of Our Lord 492, the Lady Igraine was heavy with child, and that later in that same year the mysterious wizard Merlin was seen leaving Tintagil Castle with a newborn infant in his arms. But these stories come from peasants and commoners. So far none of the noblemen of Cornwall have backed up these claims, and the Lady Igraine has been living in seclusion since the death of the king, and she hasn’t said anything about having any children other than the 3 daughters she had with Duke Goloris.

4) The gold and silver items stolen last year from the Church’s sacristy have not yet been recovered.

5) There is more thievery going on in town. This time from within the very castle itself! A jewel encrusted dagger belonging to Sir Gorn sans Humour, the earl’s butler, has gone missing. It was inside a locked chest in his chambers, and someone managed to pick the lock. That’s pretty skillful for the kind of thieves that tend to turn up in the town of Beale Valet.

6) Since the death of King Uther, the Forest Sauvage has grown more, well, savage. Within just a few months the few actual roads within it have become barely discernable paths. And what used to be paths have disappeared altogether. Strange creatures have been spotted among the trees, including a great black bear which people are calling… the Great Black Bear! Britain is a very wild land, but it is almost as if the presence of a Pendragon on the throne kept a lot of its wildness at bay somehow.

7) Just about everyone in Beale Valet has heard the story of Sir Edam, Sir Lester and Sir Tilvor. Or to be more specific, how they tore down an old dilapidated cottage on the outskirts of town believed to have once been the abode of the Witch of Raven Wood who died years ago. These three knights build a feast hall in its place, but later Lester and Tilvor went mad and died. Some say the ghost of the witch cursed them, and that Edam is next. Well, that’s old news. Here’s the new news. A hunter recently returned from a hunting trip white as a sheet. He claims that the old dilapidated cottage of the Witch of Raven Wood still stands, looking just like it did before the three knights destroyed it. But it no longer sits on the outskirts of Beale Valet, but instead it’s in the deep shadowy depths of the Forest Sauvage!

8) The Saxon kings, Octa and Eosa, barely managed to escape from the army of King Uther last year. It is said that they are now residing in a fortified keep somewhere in Essex. It is also said that they have sent a team of warriors across the channel and to the icy land of Frisia. It seems there is some sort of Saxon relic of great supernatural power that they desire. If they get it, they will use it to help them conquer all of Britain!

9) A road is called the King’s Road when those who travel upon it are guaranteed protection under the king’s justice. Since the death of King Uther, Regmar the Brigand King has claimed that he is now the lord of the King’s Road which runs from Beale Valet to Hertford. He promises protection to all travelers who are willing to pay for it. Maybe it’s time for Earl Dafydd or one of the other local nobles to send some knights into Landoine Forest and put an end to Regmar and his band of cutthroats.

Meeting the Daughters of Sir Galadorn
A.D. 496 allowed some of the squires to encounter the four daughters of Sir Galadorn, allowing for the formation of first impressions that may (or may not) have an impact on any future relationships. Generally speaking, nobles (including knights) are not consider eligible for marriage until they are landed. PCs in Pendragon may not be landed (and therefore ready for marriage) until the age of 22 or higher.

Moreover, nobles are expected to marry someone of comparable social status. It is acceptable for the daughters of a banneret knight to marry vassal knights, because on the social ladder, a banneret knight is only “one step” above a vassal knight. Such an arrangement is even more plausible in the case of the family of Sir Galadorn, seeing as they have lost their estate (Brooks Narrow in Southports) and are not able to provide much in terms of a dowry for the girls.

In light of all this, the squires are meeting Claressant, Joanette, Willow and Solei while they are still very young, so that by the time the squires are, hopefully, landed, these daughters of Sir Galadorn will be old enough to be marriage prospects. For the record, the prime marriageable age for women in the Huntington Campaign will be, generally speaking, 16-20. In actual medieval Europe it was 12-14, but this was compelled by a shorter lifespan than what is experienced in Pendragon. Hence, the GM has bumped the age range upwards accordingly.

Squire Tasks
The Marketplace: Celsus and Donecus were sent to the marketplace in Beale Valet to pick up a shipment of wine for the castle. Therein they met Claressant who seemed to be enamored by her blonde hair and blue eyes. Perceiving that she has a fondness for presents, and having been told that it is her birthday, Celsus bought her a brass hand mirror (that had a notable price tag of 18 d.). Donecus, having spent all his money on a suit of ring mail, did not get Claressant a gift. Celsus has made a good first impression on Claressant.

The Church: Damahaut, Arthras and Romulus went to the Church of the Sacred Heart to get some Holy Water and arrange for a Mass to be offered on behalf of Sir Edam. Therein they meet Joanette, who has brown hair and green eyes. She always says devotions in a church on her birthday, and invites the squires to pray devotions with her in the church’s Chapel of St. Peter. Joanette obviously takes Christianity very seriously. A Religion roll was required of the squires to see how well they participated in the prayer service. Romulus failed his roll, while Damahaut and Arthras tied. Joanette was impressed by how well they did the devotions, but Arthras made the best first impression upon her, having an Appearance of 16 (compared to Damahaut’s 5).

The Docks and Castle Courtyard: Jaufre, Galien, and Aengus were sent to take a load of decorative bricks and deliver them to the castle courtyard, where they will be used to pave a pathway in the garden. In the courtyard they encountered Willow playing a harp and composing a song about the beauty of her new home in Huntington. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Although she is obviously incredibly talented as a songwriter and musician, she invited the squires to help her compose the song as a way of making friends. All of them failed their Compose rolls (even though assistance from Willow gave them a +5 bonus). Galien actually fumbled. But she cheerfully accepted the meager contributions because making friends was her primary goal. Nevertheless, Willow prizes music and song, and none of these squires made a good first impression upon her. That designation would happen later in the year, in London, with Riorden.

The Blacksmith: Turpin, Dragan and Riorden are sent to the town smithy to pick up a large chain from and deliver it to the courtyard of the castle where it is to be installed in the gatehouse’s portcullis. There they met a group of very creepy and intimidating blacksmiths (Valter, Hamon & Hablet). They also met Solei, who has red hair and green eyes. She was in the smithy looking for scraps of metal and such to use in her Industry-oriented projects. Turpin immediately made the best first impression upon her simply due to having a higher Appearance score than the other two squires. She said she wanted to speak to Turpin while she wanted Dragan and Riorden to get something for her. When they asked what they were supposed to get, she sternly said, “GET… OUT… OF… MY… SIGHT!” After they left, Solei offered Turpin a flask of ale. When he accepted her act of hospitality, he discovered that it was a magic potion which temporarily turned his skin green. Solei, obviously, is a young practitioner of alchemy, and this was her first successful potion. Because Turpin looked green like a lizard, Solei nicknamed him “Lizard.” Despite being the subject of a prank, Turpin graciously accepted the joke in good humor.

Squire Training
In addition to the usual sort of training, Sir Edam led intense weapon training in the use of the spear.

Special Winter Adventure
The squires joined Earl Dafydd in a retinue which traveled to the Church of St. Paul in London for a special gathering hosted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. All the noble men of the realm were invited to try to draw Excalibur from the stone, including the members of the Company of the Crimson Hawk. Everyone (naturally) failed to remove it, so no new King of Britain was revealed this year.

This trip included a deer hunting expedition which the squires undertook.

Willow suggested that a song be composed to inspire people to pray for a new High King to be given to the people, and the archbishop liked the idea so much that he held a song writing contest. Riorden competed against the other squires to win the right to be Willow’s song-writing assistant. The song they composed ended up winning the contest, which included defeating a professional minstrel and bard.

The Battle of St. Albans

Game Location: July 18, 2014 at the Guild Hall’s Atrium in Savannah. FWIW, this Pendragon session was the very first Guild Hall event (game or otherwise) held in the Atrium. The name of the Atrium has since been changed to Miskatonic Labs.

Background
Each of the above listed squires is the son of a mercenary knight hired by Earl Dafydd of Huntington to assist King Uther Pendragon in his war against Saxon invaders. As part of the payment for the mercenary knights, the earl is providing training for their sons. If the squires improve their skills and are found worthy, they will become bachelor knights in the service of the earl. The squires joined the newly formed Company of the Crimson Hawk and are under the care of a vassal knight named Sir Edam. The Company of the Crimson Hawk are being housed in the Town of Beale Valet, the capital of Huntington.

The wife of Earl Dafydd is the Countess Lanna, and their children are Faulkas and Synduil.

Rumors for A.D. 495
The townspeople of Beale Valet are alarmed because someone has broken into the sacristy of the Church of the Sacred Heart. Many golden and silver items were stolen, including chalices, patens, and candlesticks.

Sir Edam and two of his friends, Sir Lester and Sir Tilvor, built a feast hall on the outskirts of Beale Valet and few years ago. In order to do this, they tore down the abandoned remains of a cottage which used to be the abode of the Witch of Raven Wood, a foul denizen of evil who died many years ago. Many people felt the land was cursed, but the three knights refused to heed the warnings. A few months after they completed and started using the feast hall, Sir Lester fell into a state of madness. In the dead of winter he maniacally attacked and killed his family and then fled into the Sauvage Forest, only to freeze to death. During the following year, Sir Tilvor went crazy, spending all his time obsessively hunting for a giant blue boar that no one else could see. His corpse was found in the woods by a family of woodcutters. Sir Tilvor, in a fit of madness, had hung himself. It seems that the vengeful spirit of the Witch of Raven Wood haunts those who defiled her homestead, inflicting them with a curse of madness. No doubt, Sir Edam is next!

Regmar “the Brigand King” hides in the depths of the Landoine Forest with a group of lawless rouges. Occasionally they waylay travelers along the Kings Road.

The Battle of St. Albans
Two Saxon kings, Octa and Eosa, led a huge force of Saxons from Essex to invade central Logres. King Uther Pendragon took his army to meet them outside the Town of St. Albans. Because the members of the Company of the Crimson Hawk were young, barely trained squires, they were given an easy task far from the front line of combat. Namely, the were charged with protecting 8 supply wagons along with the peasants who handled the supplies. At camp, the squires noticed that the peasants were quietly arming themselves, and when confronted they shouted “Kill the puppies!” (meaning the player-characters). It turns out the peasants were actually Saxons in disguise who wanted to wipe out the Company of the Crimson Hawk and take the supplies to their barbarian allies. Nevertheless, the squires defeated them in combat.

The army of King Uther rounded defeated the Saxons in the Battle of St. Albans, causing Octa and Eosa to resort to a strategic withdrawal. The squires participated at a huge victory feast in the presence of the king. The next day they learned the tragic news that Uther had died during the night, treacherously poisoned by a physician who was tending his wounds. It seems that not only the squires had a sinister encounter with Saxons in disguise!

The Beginning of the Huntington Campaign

I have been running the Pendragon RPG since its initial publication in 1985. The Huntington Campaign is my forth Pendragon foray, for which I established a gaming club called the Savannah Pendragon League on June 25, 2014. The first actual session took place on July 18, 2014. My players and I elected to use the 4th edition rules because they are what we are most familiar with. The initial characters were sons of mercenary knights in the service of Earl Dafydd of Huntington County, with this area of Logres being the primary setting of the campaign. For the timeline, we use The Boy King supplement (with The Great Pendragon Campaign as a secondary source). In light of all this, each player-character began his career as a squire with humble origins in A.D. 495.
